Photodynamic Therapy

In summary, photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a procedure that uses a photosensitizing cream prior to the light and/or laser therapy selectively to target damaged cells.

PDT combines a topical drug, called a photosensitizer, which is preferentially absorbed by certain kind of cells and a light source.  When used together, the photo sensitizer and the light destroy the undesired lesions.

When PDT is used for rejuvenation of the skin aminolevulinic acid, a clear solution is applied to the entire surface of the skin to be treated. After an appropriate amount of time, the skin is exposed to a light or laser source.

After the treatment, the skin will be extremely light sensitive for 48 to 72 hours. Light exposure is to be avoided to protect the skin during this time.  Most of the time, redness and mild peeling occur over the next two to three days. Occasionally, there can be a burning discomfort for 24 hours and prolonged peeling and redness of up to five to 14 days.

Gentle skin care should be used for 48 hours post treatment. Do not use AHA or any abrasive products for 28 to 72 hours after PDT treatment.  Sessions are generally two to three weeks apart and one to three treatments are advised.
